By Sea fine art 8 × 10 print is a tribute to the many Gujaratis who journeyed by sea from Porbandar to East Africa, often as teenagers, leaving behind everything familiar to begin a new life in an unknown land.

The journey was made aboard dhows, traditional wooden sailing vessels guided by the winds. The crossings could be long and difficult, marked by sickness, uncertainty, songs, and solitude.

Nearly 100 years ago, my Great-Grandmother made this journey as a 17-year-old new bride. During the voyage, a sailor known as a Kharva painted her portrait. This painting is my rendition of that original.

She could not have known where the journey would take her, or the life that awaited her on the other side of the sea.

I hope By Sea serves as a reminder of the courage carried by our ancestors and of the many journeys that began with nothing more than a boat heading toward a distant shore.
