At 28, she became a bride in Uganda, her face carrying the beauty, hope, and happiness of a woman beginning a new chapter.

She could not have known what life would ask of her.

For years, Uganda was home. She built a life there, never imagining that in 1972, when Idi Amin ordered the expulsion of Uganda’s Asian population, the life she had known would be uprooted, transforming her existence into that of a refugee in transit.

So I painted her not only as a bride, but as a woman standing at the threshold of a life she believed she understood.

There is something especially poignant about the hope in her face. She had no way of knowing how much she would one day have to leave behind, or how much strength she would need to carry forward.
